Groups B, TMA05. Lord, Give Me Strength!
Oh Lordy, what a nightmare this TMA is. Rotate this, congugate that, Fix this, Kernel that.
Now, I class myself as a bit of a '3D specialist', being able to spin objects around in my head easier, it seems, than most. I am told, that this is often the case with people who have Dyslexia, such as myself. However, TMA05 requires 4D IMAX, surround sound With full 1080p HD and Blue Ray capability, to answer parts one and four. (Chris, you'll know what I'm talking about!)
Anyway, I must get back to my calculations, as I can see that this one is going to require some midnight coffee and Orio's.

Yeah quite I hated that part of the TMA put me off the OU way of tackling groups for life and I can't see that it is really testing your understanding of conjugacy classes etc.
ReplyDeleteIt's all so unnecessary as there is a systematic way of obtaining the symmetries of a 3d object used by Chemists to classify the symmetries of molecules.
A big clue is that the number of direct symmetries must equal the number of indirect symmetries.
As for rotating flags or squares on a chessboard again another nightmare. Put me off the counting theorem for life
